Do you love the 5GB (soon to be 25GB) of free online storage provided by SkyDrive, but wish you could access it browser-free? That’s the promise of a new application called Gladinet, a desktop software program that delivers web applications and online files to your desktop. With Gladinet installed, online storage sites like SkyDrive and others become available through Windows Explorer, where they exist as a virtual drive. Gladinet provides an application on your desktop that enables you to map SkyDrive to your list of networked drives. Floods everywhere
Well the silence for the past 1 week was due to the floods in Tamil Nadu. A cyclone brought its due of rains and filled up the reservoirs in the state but left a trail of destructions and havoc. And worse to add to all this misery was the power shut down in the entire state to prevent electrocution. Low voltage coupled with high voltage was enough to destroy some of the electrical appliances in most of the houses. Flooding of the roads and streets in the ground floor as well as water entering the houses made up the complete story and showed the inefficiency of the Corporation and Metro water. Now that the rains have stopped completely but the wounds inflicted on the common man hasn’t gone away and the news papers are all carrying out news showing the ire of the common man against the government. November 26 Community Tech Days 2008
It was a great time to host the Community Tech Days 2008 on Saturday 22nd November. We had the event in 2 places on the same day (one for developers and another for IT pros). I managed the IT pro session in Anna university and we had some cool sessions. In spite of raining on that day, the event had a good reasonable turn over. The sessions also had something new in store for the audience. At the end of the day, we had a quiz contest and some of the attendees walked away with cool prizes. Also since I had to host the IT Pro event, I missed out being at the developer’s event. November 19 Silverlight Tips of the Day

Last week Microsoft released the final version of Silverlight version 2. There has been a lot of changes in the final version and those of you who have been developing on beta 2 all these days should download the final version. You will have to install the Silverlight_Tools.exe and this setup is smart enough to remove the beta 2 tools as well as remains left by the beta tool. Just relax and let this tool get the work done. You will also need to install SP1 of Expression Blend 2 if you are using Expression Blend 2 – June 2008 preview. Instructions are available on http://www.silverlight.net/. Microsoft Web Platform Installer
The Web Application Installer Beta is designed to help get you up and running with the most widely used Web Applications freely available for your Windows Server. Web AI provides support for popular ASP.Net and PHP Web applications including Graffiti, DotNetNuke, WordPress, Drupal, OSCommerce and more. With just a few simple clicks, Web AI will check your machine for the necessary pre-requisites, download these applications from their source location in the community, walk you through basic configuration items and then install them on your computer. For those of you who are clueless or wondering if you were doing the right way in configuring your server for hosting a website, this tool comes in handy and asks what you want to install/configure on the server. Just select the components including SQL Server Express if you want so and then leave it to the experts. The installer does all that for you. This should be helpful for those who are not quite technical in depth to configure a web server. Get it from here. Windows Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2: Technology Overview for Developers

Been using IE 8 Beta 2 since the day it was announced. Here are some of my interesting points that i like about IE 8 B2. 1. Colored tabs to identify if they are from the same link. when you right click on a link on a page and it opens in a new tab then both of them will have the same color. This helps you to identify the related pages so that you don’t close them by mistake. 2. In Private Browsing. this helps to view email and other pages that you don't want to leave cookies around. I wish that there could be a mode where you select In Private Browsing by default. 3. Web Slices. That is a cool feature where you can subscribe and then view without having to check back with the website daily. September 18 Welcome back – after a very long long time.
Hi, Welcome back to reading my blogs and it has been such a long time since updating the blogs. Reason are innumerable and excuses are silly to be written down. Now the first thing that you would want to know is that the Virtual Tech Days are back and going on live at the moment. Catch all the action here. There are plenty of things to be learned here and yesterday I happened to attend the presentation on Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 for developers. This was quite amazing to see the features that is in store. Best of all I liked was about Web Slices. Reminds me about a funny ad that appeared earlier. You can see the pictures here. May 30 Windows Server 2008 with IIS 7Now that Windows Server 2008 has been released there has been a lot of excitement in the market about what is in store for us. Also one of the biggest selling point of Windows Server 2008 is the newly designed IIS 7 (Internet Information Server). IIS 7 has been redesigned from the ground up to provide a modularized feature of configuration for both the administrator and the developer.
Let me narrate below how I studied about migrating an existing ASP.NET 2.0 website from Windows Server 2003/IIS 6 to Windows Server 2008/IIS 7.
First I got a copy of Windows Server 2008 and then began the installation. I chose the Enterprise Edition and the installation was completed in a few minutes. The first thing that Setup asked me was to change my password and use a strong password. This is mandatory during the setup of Windows Server 2008.
Since the primary use of this server was to configure IIS 7 and use it as a web server, I configured it as an application server by adding the role of Application Server. Setup did the necessary tasks by including .NET 3.5. and also I had to configure the timezone and configure TCP/IP.
Internet Information Server 7 has a new interface and it is now simpler to manage websites with the tools found in the home page. I copied the runtime files of my web application from Windows Server 2003 and copied it over to Windows Server 2008 and then created a new Virtual Directory in IIS 7. IIS 7's configuration wizard is smart enough to detect that the folder has a Default.aspx file and made it the default start up file.
Thinking that this was all needed to run Web applications in IIS 7 mode, I ran the website for the first time and was surprised to see the following message
"An ASP.NET setting has been detected that does not apply in Integrated managed pipeline mode."
Googling for this error message brought up several pages and the best bet was to read the information from whom else but the developers of IIS 7 since they are the best source of information for any new breaking feature.
The news to observe is the following paragraph.
IIS7 takes ASP.NET to the next level, by integrating the ASP.NET runtime extensibility model with the core server. This allows developers to fully extend the IIS server with the richness of ASP.NET 2.0 and the .NET Framework, instead of using the lower level IIS C++ APIs. Existing ASP.NET applications also immediately benefit from tighter integration, by being able to use existing ASP.NET features like Forms Authentication, Roles, and Output Caching for all types of content.
While IIS7 provides the improved ASP.NET integration by default, the choice is yours: IIS7 supports both the new and the old ASP.NET integration modes that can be
used side by side on the same server.
Since I needed to understand how IIS 7 handles ASP.NET 2.0 websites and my website uses Form Authentication, I did the following steps.
Added the following code to my web.config file of the ASP.NET 2.0 website
<system.webServer> <validation validateIntegratedModeConfiguration="false" /> </system.webServer> After this the website started working and also I noted a faster performance when navigating from page to page and this is much faster than what was seen in Windows Server 2003/IIS 6.
Now that the website has been configured, there is still more to be observed and that will be written in the blogs in the future. Stay tuned. August 29 Kodak Gallery on Windows Vista.I have been using Kodak's online album for saving my photos as well as sharing them with friends. This is a good album site and also provides you with tools to upload multiple photos at the same time.
When Vista was released last year and then I had to wait for an update from Kodak because their current plugin for uploading multiple photos doesnt work in Vista. Everytime this tool is launched the viewer gets a message that the plug in wasnt installed.
I had hoped that Kodak would update this plugin for Vista and thought to wait for a couple of weeks or months. Since I had been tied up with travelling and office work, I hadnt touched on my online album for about 5 months. Lately I came across this article on ZdNet (http://blogs.zdnet.com)
Reading this article carefully made me wonder if there will be a fix for this upload plugin in Vista or will i have to go back to Windows XP just to update my favourite online album.
Time alone will tell. July 05 Usage of Powershell to automate tasks in a networked environment.Recently I happened to work with Powershell to create a tool will contain all resources required to automate the basic activities done on a day to day basis.
First the basic task was to create a inventory report of all the workstations in the corporate environment that was part of the domain. This was done using scripting and powershell and the output would be written to a text file on a particular folder on the server. This script is called via the login script so that the script can be called automatically when the user logs in the next day.
However we faced some particular scenarios where this didnt work as expected.
1). This script worked perfectly only on windows xp professional and failed to work on windows 2000 professional.
2). Since the servers are running round the clock and locked and never logged off the network. hence it was uncertain how to capture the information from the servers without usage of the login script. 3). The script could only capture the details as found in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall. But there are some third party applications that do not write to this registry or they never create registry entries because they were created with a different installer apart from msi (Microsoft Windows Installer). Also if the application is not installed on the root drive but another partition then it is not possible to trace it.
It was good to see the usage of Powershell to capture inventory information at a breeze with hundreds of computers in a domain and that also without any man power which would have taken several days to complete. April 02 Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager OverviewThis IIS Manager overview explains why IIS7 has an entirely new user interface, and then goes on to describe the look and feel, feature delegation, interaction with configuration, and remoting. This document was written for Longhorn Server. Windows Vista may not have some of the functionality/features discussed in this document. The Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager is entirely new in IIS7. Why did it have to change? So glad you asked – here are a few of our top reasons: Read more here. |
